Fedex stock surges amid layoffs

FedEx has been instituting a number of cost control practices as part of their DRIVE transformation initiative which began last year. The initiative was presented to investors as a plan to “consolidate its operating companies into one organization, creating efficiencies that will enhance the company’s ability to meet the evolving needs of customers and ultimately build a stronger, more profitable enterprise.” A surge in cost of shares last week is attributed to the DRIVE efforts.

41st Annual Fiddlers Convention

The 41st Annual Arkansas Fiddlers Convention continues Saturday and Sunday morning at the south campus of North Arkansas College in Harrison. The convention opens this morning at 9 a.m. with Jam Sessions all day long. At 10 a.m. Individual Fiddlers (organized by Jim and Shirley Christensen of Harrison) will be on stage at the Little Theatre inside Northark College. 2:30 pm will be the Awards and Acknowledgements, and at 3:30 p.m. will be band performances at the Little Theatre. Sunday will be Gospel from 9—10:30 am by the Unashamed Gospel Bluegrass group.

New mural finished on Central Ave.

A new mural was completed in Harrison on Friday afternoon. The large scale piece depicts a scene of settlers representative of those killed in the Mountain Meadows Massacre of 1857.

Free laundry day offered to community

Foundation Tables, a local non-profit group committed to helping neighbors in need, is hosting a Wash Wellness Day on Sunday, March 31, 3—8 p.m. The event will take place at Wash World on the by-pass in Harrison — 400 S Hwy 62/65.

Remains found in Carroll County fire

Carroll County Sheriff Daniel Klatt has confirmed that a fatality was discovered on Wednesday following a structure fire. At approximately 10:21 PM, Carroll County Dispatch received a call of a residential structure fire in the area of CR 140. Deputies, Fire, and EMS personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene.

DALLAS — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently finalized a settlement with the Arkansas Midland Railroad Company over alleged hazardous waste violations at a private rail track in Hot Springs, Arkansas. The company illegally stored more than 750,000 gallons of highly flammable hazardous waste in rail cars near homes, a school, and waterways. Under the settlement, the company must pay a civil penalty of $910,985. Under direction from EPA, the waste was removed and disposed of in a permitted facility.
LITTLE ROCK — Bryan Malinowski, 53, died after a shootout with federal authorities Tuesday morning in west Little Rock. Malinowski was the executive director of Bill & Hillary Clinton National Airport.
The statewide gas price average in Arkansas was $3.18 for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel on Thursday, according to the AAA Arkansas Weekend Gas Watch. That price is 11 cents more compared to that day last week and 14 cents more compared to that day last year.

Jerree Winn has spent most of her life in the cosmetology world. Now, with over four decades of experience, she has announced her retirement. Winn's journey began at 15 when she first started cosmetology school. She pursued her training off and on, eventually graduating from Lyle‘s School of Cosmetology in Fresno, Calif. in 1981.

Home dismantled, but repurposed

An iconic home located in the heart of Harrison has been dismantled this week. The house at 1402 Speer Drive was built in 1874. It has been standing tall in a clearing surrounded by virgin timber for generations — a quiet reminder of years gone by, as the town has gone through much growth and many changes around it.

Mt. Judea Learning Center to close March 22
