Petition signing opportunities

An informal group of citizens will be hosting petition signing opportunities for Arkansas’s November ballot initiatives on the Harrison square, by the gazebo, on Thursdays 2 p.m - 6 p.m. beginning May 9. The group is currently, and will continue to host the signings on Saturdays 7 a.m.-Noon.

Camp Jack column: You were worth it

At least a couple times each month, I hear a group of veterans discussing the catch phrase, “Thank you for your service.” None of them seem to like hearing it and most say it makes them feel awkward trying to come up with a response. In fact, in my very first column some 4-1/2 years ago, I talked about this issue. Responding with “you’re welcome” to a stranger seems wrong somehow. I have tried several responses, but they all seem too little or like I am taking credit for something I don’t deserve. I finally settled on just smiling and nodding my head.

State restrictions on crypto mines approved

LITTLE ROCK — Arkansas lawmakers on Wednesday gave final approval to new restrictions on cryptocurrency mining operations after facing backlash for limiting local governments' ability to regulate them last year.

Arkansas EHC, state's largest volunteer org

LITTLE ROCK —  Arkansas Extension Homemakers Council is the largest volunteer organization in the state, with nearly 3,000 members in more than 300 clubs. The organization provides important opportunities for leadership, education and fellowship.

Wednesday night a discussion of the future of the Harrison square was held at the Brandon Burlsworth Youth Center.

House of Hope audit issues addressed

Arkansas Legislative Audit (ALA) has released an audit report of Harrison House of Hope (HHH) this month. The report indicates there were concerns regarding the organization’s compliance with its funding program’s requirements and adherence to the group’s own bylaws during a review period of July 1, 2021— Nov. 30, 2023.

Free laundry day offered to community

Foundation Tables, a local non-profit group committed to helping neighbors in need, is hosting a Wash Wellness Day on Sunday, April 28, 3—7 p.m. The event will take place at Wash World on the by-pass in Harrison — 400 S Hwy 62/65.

The statewide gas price average in Arkansas was $3.19 for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel on Thursday, according to the AAA Arkansas Weekend Gas Watch. That price is two cents less compared to that day last week and is one cent more compared to that day last year.
The Arkansas Alcoholic Beverage Control Division announced this week that it had revoked the license of medical marijuana dispensary Green Springs Medical Dispensary in Hot Springs. This is the first time a dispensary license has been revoked since the medical cannabis industry launched in Arkansas in 2019.
LITTLE ROCK — Arkansas’ electric cooperatives recently announced the results of a study examining the economic contributions that the state’s electric cooperatives have made within communities across the state from 2017 through 2022.

Members of the Boone County Quilters met at the Countryside assisted living facility on April 17 to provide a quilt show for the residents. Several quilts by Jackie Holt and Mary Ayers were displayed and members of the group held up quilts and walked around the room so that residents could see them up close and touch them.
Amanda Furr
Amanda Furr hails from Northeast Iowa but moved to Harrison in 1996. She has been working at the Daily Times since 2008 — currently she juggles many responsibilities in the front office, including accounts payable. Furr enjoys spending time outdoors, reading, and hanging out with her son, Dakota — a 2021 HHS graduate.

Major General Jonathan M. Stubbs, Adjutant General for the Arkansas National Guard, was the featured speaker Friday morning to the Junior and Seniors at Harrison High School. Students gathered in the Performing Arts Center to see Gen. Stubbs share his bio, information about the National Guard, life choices, and character development.

Harrison board approves expulsion of two students

At its recent Monty meeting, the Harrison School Board conducted two student hearings and voted to expel both.

Boone County Library Corner

The outside of the library will soon get a new coat of paint. Currently they are washing/bleaching the outside, so please be careful. We will have areas blocked off – Please use caution when entering and exiting the library.

GED Tutors needed

A new program with North Arkansas College has great potential to help people in our community by tutoring low-literacy students prepare for the GED test. The program is seeking tutors — those who have some experience or related experience and an interest in teaching. At the tutor’s convenience, the tutor will meet with the student for 1-2 hours weekly at the college. NorthArk hours are Monday – Thursday 8 a.m.—5 p.m.

HHS student taken into police custody

Harrison High School administrators were alerted to a gun on campus on Tuesday, April 23. School officials discovered that the student was in possession of a BB gun of the pistol type.
